Hello, I am your guest teacher, Nimbus. I was told Maggie Sensei to make a lesson so that you can keep studying Japanese.
OK, today’s lesson is how to use
通り= とおり= toori
(You can write it with kanji or hiranaga)

How to form:

* verb (dictionary form / past  tense/ present continuous form / past continuous form / passive form / honorific form, etc) + 通り( = とおり) toori

* 言う通り= 言うとおり= iu toori = as one says (said)

* 言った通り= 言ったとおり= itta toori = as one said

* 言っている通り= 言っているとおり=  itte iru toori = as one has been saying

言っていた通り = 言っていたとおり =  itte ita toori = as one was saying/had been saying
言われた通り = 言われたとおり = iwareta toori = as one was told / (honorific ) as someone superior said

Note: Polite form:

*おっしゃる通り = ossharu toori  = as you say (said)

*申し上げた通り = moushiageta toori = as I said

* noun / verb noun form + (
= no) 通り ( = とおりどおり) = toori/doori

(天気)予報通り =(天気)予報どおり=  (tenki) yohou doori  = as the (weather) forecast said
テキストの通り = テキストのとおり= tekisuto no toori = as it is said in the textbook

You can also say:
テキスト通り = テキストどおり= tekisuto doori = as it is written in the textbook

Note: When you make a compound words with a noun or a verb in noun form, the way you read 通り changes to どおり( = doori)

* verb 狙う = ねらう = nerau = to aim, to plan

* noun form (masu-stemu) 狙い = ねらい = nerai = aiming / planning
狙い通り = 狙いどおり = nerai doori = as planned

**
Basic patterns:

1) Something is as ~

Something + ( = wa) + verb/  noun + 通り ( = toori / doori) + (  ~  ) + です ( = desu)  / past tense でした ( = deshita)

2) to do something as ~ / following ~

* noun / verb + 通り ( = toori ni/ doori ni ) + verb / phrase

* noun/verb + 通り ( = toori  doori ) + verb / phrase

3) something 通り ( = toori/ doori) +  ( = no) + noun

****

OK, now I will give you many example sentences as always.

1) Something is as ~

Something + ( = wa) + verb/  noun + (= no) +    通り ( = toori / doori) + (  ~  ) + ( = da) / です ( = desu)  / past tense だった ( = datta)  / でした ( = deshita)

Ex.
詳細は下記の通りです。

= Shousai wa kaki no toori desu.

= The details are as follows.

Ex. この映画の結末は想像通りだった。

= Kono eiga no ketsumatsu wa souzou doori datta.

= The ending of this movie was just as I had imagined.

Ex. ゴールデンウイーク中は、列車のダイヤは通常通りではありません。

= Gooruden wuiiku chuu wa, ressha no daiya wa tsuujou doori dewa arimasen.

= During the Golden Week Holidays, the train schedule is irregular.

Ex. 参加方法は、以前お知らせした通りです。

= Sanka houhou wa, izen oshirase shita toori desu.

= The application method is as previously stated.

2)  to do something as ~ / following ~

* noun / verb +  通りに ( = toori ni / doori ni ) + verb / phrase

* noun / verb +  通り ( = toori  doori ) + verb / phrase

Ex. 飛行機は時間通りに着いた。

= Hikouki wa jikandoori ni tsuita.

= The plane arrived on time.

Ex. この通りに漢字を書いてください。

= Kono toori ni kanji wo kaite kudasai.

= Please write the kanji exactly like this.

Ex.
本番も練習通りにやればうまくいくはずです。

= Honban mo renshuu doori ni yareba umaku iku hazu desu.

= The actual performance should go well if you do what you practiced.

Ex.
人生、思い通りにいかないときは一度立ち止まって少し休んでみよう。別の道が見えるかもしれない

= Jinsei, omoidoori ni ikanai toki wa ichido tachidomatte sukoshi yasunde miyou. Betsu no michi ga mieru kamo shirenai.

When your life doesn’t work as you wanted, stop once and take a rest. You may see another way.

Note: In this case you can say 思った通り( = omotta toori) but there is a nuance difference between 思い通り( = omoidoori) and 思った通り( = omotta toori).

思い通り( = omoidoori) as one intended / planned.

思った通り( = omotta toori) can also be used “as one intended / planned” as well but it is also has the meaning of “as one thought / imagined / expected”

Ex. 彼は思った通り優しい人だった。

= Kare wa omotta toori yasashii hito datta.

= He was as sweet a person as I thought he would be.

In this case you can’t use 思い通り( = omoidoori) because the fact that he is sweet has nothing to do with your plans.

Ex. 彼は約束通りに4時に迎えに来てくれた。

= Kare wa yakusoku doori ni yoji ni mukaeni kite kureta.

= He picked me up at four as promised.

Ex. この本の通りに料理を作ったのにうまくいかなかった。

= Konohon no toori ni ryouri wo tsukutta noni umaku ikanakatta.
= I followed (the recipe in) the book and cooked the meal, but it didn’t turn out well.

Ex. A:「明日、JLPTの試験なんだ。緊張するなあ。」

= Ashita, JLPT no shiken nannda. Kinchou surunaa.

= I have a JLPT exam tomorrow.  I feel so nervous.

B:「いつも通りにリラックスしたらいいよ。」

= Itsumo doori ni rirakkusu shitara iiyo.

= You should just relax as always.

Ex. 今、マギー先生がお話しした通り、明日は、日本語のテストをします。

= Ima, Maggie Sensei ga ohanashi shita toori, ashita wa, nihongo no tesuto wo shimasu.

= As Maggie Sensei just said now, we are going to have a Japanese test tomorrow.

Note: You say (Someone) 言う通りです( = (Someone no) iu toori desu) / おっしゃる通りです ( = ossharu toori desu) when you agree with what someone just said.

“Exactly.” / “True.” / “You are right.”

Ex. Maggie: 「心と体を大切にしなくてはいけません。」

= Kokoro to karada wo taisetsu ni shinakute wa ikemasen.

= You have to take care of your mind and body.

B: 「マギー先生の言う通りです。」

= Maggie Sensei no iu toori desu.

= You just said it, Maggie sensei. (You are absolutely right.)

or

B: 「おっしゃる通りです。」(polite)

= Ossharu toori desu.

= You are right. (I agree with you.)

Ex. 恐れていた通り、終電に間に合わなかった。

= Osorete ita toori, shuuden ni maniawanakatta.

= As I was concerned, I missed the last train.

Special verb form:

You usually use verb masu stem + 通り( = toori) but there are exceptions.

Vての ( = teno) + 通り( = toori)

*
ての通り = みてのとおり= mite no toori = as you can see, as it was shown,as has been seen
(more polite)
ご覧の通り = ごらんのとおり= goran no toori = as you can see

Ex. A:「最近忙しいの?」

= Saikin isogashii no?

= You have been busy lately?

ABINAYA!
      英語で説明しますね。
      There is a difference between 「はず」 and 「わけ」 (Ex. you can use 「はず」when you are talking about future but you can’t use 「わけ」,etc.)
      But 「はずがない」 and 「わけがない」 are interchangeable.
      The slight difference is はずがない is more subjective and わけがない is more objective.
      So you tend to use はずがない more when you have some specific reasons.

  2. As always, thank you for your wonderful lessons! They are really useful to help me fill the gaps of my grammar knowledge!

    I have a question about 見ての通り! This was the first time I’ve seen this expression so I was bit confused. I always thought that の is used to connect two nouns. A few days after I read your lesson, I encountered the phrase やってみての感想 in real life.

    My question is, does verb-ての make up a different grammar point or are there only certain phrases that use this form? I’ve tried looking this up online, but couldn’t find any concrete explanations.

    Again, thanks for being a great teacher!

    1. Hi J
      First Vての通り pattern is very limited. 見ての通り・知っての通り are two main ones.

      Vての+ noun is different from these usage.
      Vての means “Vてからの〜” (~ that after you have done ~ )
      やってみての感想 = You do something and then give a feedback.
      勝ってみてのお楽しみ = You win first and then you get some reward.

      Another common usage is something/someone あっての~ : Something/someone is essential for ~ / ~ wouldn’t exist without something/someone
      Ex. このサイトはみなさんあってのサイトです。
      Ex. 仕事あっての人生
      Ex. 夢あっての人生

  3. マギー先生こんにちは!

    いつもレッスン作ってありがとうございます!今回のレッスンもいい勉強になりました :)

    ちょっと質問がありますが、
    「時」、「度」と「頃」の区別があまりわからなくて 先生に説明していただいてもいいでしょうか?いつも区別がつかないのでよく間違えたりします笑

    1. こんにちは lydia
      では、英語で説明しますね。

      時 = When
      度 = every time when
      頃= When, during the certain period of time in your life, around the time when (Ex. 五月頃)

      Test yourself
      1)明日、マギーの家に行く(   )に花を持っていきます。
      2)毎日、マギーに会う(   )に花をあげます。
      3)学生の(   )、よくマギーに花をあげていた。

  4. こんにちは先生。
       お久しぶりです。先生は元気でいらっしゃるとおもいます。
    JLPTの試験は、思った通りに、中止になってしまいました。でも、いつもどおりに、一生懸命頑張りましょう。
    引き続きよろしくお願いいたします。
