= I’m still just a kitten, but I’ll try my hardest to teach this lesson.
So today’s word is 一杯 = いっぱい = ippai.
It is one of the most common words that you will hear, see, and use in Japanese.
⭐️一杯 = いっぱい = ippai
1) A counter for a cup, bowl, or glass of something (noun)
Number + cup(s)/bowl(s) /glass(es) of something
Be careful—the reading of 杯 changes depending on the number. →はい/ばい/ぱい = hai/bai/pai
1 → 一杯 / 1杯 = いっぱい = ippai
2 → 二杯 / 2杯 = にはい = nihai
3 → 三杯 / 3杯 = さんばい = sanbai
4 → 四杯 / 4杯 = よんはい = yonhai
5 → 五杯 / 5杯 = ごはい = gohai
6 → 六杯 / 6杯 = ろっぱい = roppai
7 → 七杯 / 7杯 = ななはい = nanahai
8 → 八杯 / 8杯 = はっぱい = happai
9 → 九杯 / 9杯 = きゅうはい = kyuuhai
Ex. ビールを一杯（1杯）ください。🍺
= ビールをいっぱいください。
= Biiru wo ippai kudasai.
= One glass/mug of beer, please.
Ex. 夜、コーヒーを一杯（1杯）飲んだら眠れなくなった。
= よる、コーヒーをいっぱいのんだらねむれなくなった。
= Yoru, koohii wo ippai nondara nemurenaku natta.
= I had a cup of coffee at night and couldn’t sleep.
* 一杯の～（いっぱいの～= ippai no）+ noun
Ex. 一杯（1杯）のワイン 🍷
= いっぱいのワイン
= Ippai no wain
= One glass of wine
Ex. この店は、グラス一杯（1杯）のワインが千円以上する
= このみせは、グラスいっぱいのワインがせんえんいじょうする
= Kono mise wa, gurasu ippai no wain ga senen ijou suru.
= At this restaurant, a glass of wine costs over 1,000 yen.
Ex. ラーメン一杯/１杯 = ラーメンいっぱい =raamen ippai = One bowl of ramen 🍜
Ex. コーヒー一杯/１杯 = コーヒーいっぱい = koohii ippai = One cup of coffee ☕️
Ex. ワイン一杯/１杯 = ワインいっぱい = wain ippai = One glass of wine 🍷
* もう一杯 = もういっぱい = mou ippai = One more cup/bowl/glass/ Another cup/bowl/glass of something
Ex. ご飯、もう一杯お願いします。🍚
= ごはん、もういっぱいおねがいします。
= Goha, mou ippai onegai shimasu.
= Another bowl of rice, please.
Note: Or you can also say
→ご飯、おかわりお願いします。
= ごはん、おかわりおねがいします。
= Gohan, okawari onegai shimasu.
= Could I have a refill please?
2) Having a drink (alcoholic beverage)
Ex. 今晩、一杯飲みにいかない？🍻
= こんばん、いっぱいのみにいかない？
= Konban, ippai nomi ni ikanai ?
= Do you want to grab a drink tonight?
Ex. 一杯やろうよ。
= いっぱいやろうよ。
= Ippai yarou yo!
= Let’s have a drink!
Ex. じゃあ一杯だけいただきます。
= じゃあいっぱいだけいただきます。
= Jaa ippai dake itadakimasu.
= OK, then I’ll have just one drink (Ex. a glass of sake or beer).
3) Counter for squid/octopus or crab when sold as food
You usually count
いか = ika (squid) 🦑 /たこ = tako (octopus) 🐙 /蟹 = かに = kani (crab) 🦀 using the counter
→匹 (ひき/ぴき/びき = hiki/piki/biki ), like other fish or animals.
１匹 = いっぴき = ippiki
２匹 = にひき = nihiki
３匹 = さんびき = sanbiki ,
4匹 = よんひき = yonhiki , etc.
However, when they are sold as food, you can also use 杯 (はい/ぱい/ばい = hai/pai/bai).
Ex. この旅館では一人蟹が一杯（1杯）ずつ夕食に出されます。
= このりょかんではひとりかにがいっぱいずつゆうしょくにだされます。
= Kono ryokan dewa hitori kani ga ippai zutsu yuushoku ni dasaremasu.
= At this Japanese-style inn, they serve one crab per person for dinner.
4) a lot/many (adverb)
Note: It is common to write 一杯 in hiragana for this usage so I will use hiragana.
First of all, the pitch accent changes depending on the meaning.
🔸a cup/glass/bowl of ~
* ラーメン一杯（1杯）食べた。🍜
= ラーメンいっぱいたべた。
= Raamen ippai tabeta.
= I ate a bowl of ramen.
→いっぱい ( = ippai) ➡️ ー＿＿＿
The first syllable い is high, and the rest (っ・ぱ・い = small tsu・pa・i) are low.
Note: The pitch accent may change in some compound words/expressopms.
🔸a lot/ many
* ラーメンいっぱい食べた。🍜🍜🍜
= ラーメンいっぱいたべた。
= Raamen ippai tabeta.
= I ate a lot of ramen.
→いっぱい ( = ippai) ➡️ ＿ーーー
The first syllable い is low, and the rest (っ・ぱ・い = small “tsu”・pa・i) are high.
Ex. このサイトにはいっぱいレッスンがあります。
= Kono saito niwa ippai ressun ga arimasu.
= There are many lessons on this site.
Ex. 昨日のパーティは知らない人がいっぱいいた。
= きのうのパーティはしらないひとがいっぱいいた。
= Kinou no paatii wa shiranai hito ga ippai ita.
= There were many people that I didn’t know at the party yesterday.
Ex. 日曜日はどこに行っても人がいっぱいだ。
= にちようびはどこにいってもひとがいっぱいだ。
= Nichiyoubi wa doko ni ittemo hito ga ippai da.
= It is crowded everywhere on Sundays. / It is crowded everywhere on Sundays, no matter where you go.
Ex. 今日は、いっぱい食べたね。
= きょうは、いっぱいたべたね。
= Kyou wa, ippai tabeta ne.
= We ate a lot today, didn’t we?
Ex. 彼はお金をいっぱい持っている。
= かれはおかねをいっぱいもっている。
= Kare wa okane wo ippai motte iru.
= He has a lot of money.
Ex. 近所の人にお菓子をいっぱいもらった。
= きんじょのひとにおかしをいっぱいもらった。
= Kinjo no hito ni okashi wo ippai moratta.
= I received a lot of sweets from the neighbors.
Ex. こんなにいっぱい飲めません。
= こんなにいっぱいのめません。
= Konna ni ippai nomemasen.
= I can’t drink this much.
Note: When the amount of a drink is large.
Ex. 公園を２周ジョギングして汗をいっぱいかいた。
= こうえんをにしゅうジョギングしてあせをいっぱいかいた。
= Kouen wo nishuu jogingu shite ase wo ippai kaita.
= After jogging around the park twice, I sweated a lot.
Ex. 久しぶりに高校時代の友人に会い、いっぱい話した。
= ひさしぶりにこうこうじだいのゆうじんにあい、いっぱいはなした。
= Hisashiburi ni koukoujidai no yuujin ni ai, ippai hanashita.
= I met a friend from high school for the first time in a long time, and we talked a lot.
Ex. 今週は、いっぱい仕事をしたから週末はゆっくり休もう。
= こんしゅうは、いっぱいしごとをしたからしゅうまつはゆっくりやすもう。
= Konshuu wa, ippai shigoto wo shita kara shuumatsu wa yukkuri yasumou.
= Since I did a lot of work this week, I want to take it easy and rest on the weekend.
Ex. 家にいてもやることがいっぱいある。
= いえにいてもやることがいっぱいある。
= Ie ni itemo yaru koto ga ippai aru.
= Even when I’m at home, there are a lot of things to do.
Ex. 日本に行ったら日本人の友達をいっぱい作りたい。
= にほんにいったらにほんじんのともだちをいっぱいつくりたい。
= Nihon ni ittara nihonjin no tomodachi wo ippai tsukuritai.
= When I go to Japan, I want to make a lot of Japanese friends.
Note: Similar words: たくさん (沢山) = takusan
You can rephrase いっぱい ( = ippai) with たくさん（沢山）= takusan
→やることがたくさんある
= Yaru koto gatakusan aru
→友達をたくさん作りたい。
= ともだちをたくさんつくりたい。
= Tomodachi wo takusan tsukuritai.
5) to filled/full of
Ex. コンピューターのメモリーがもういっぱいだ。
= Konpyuutaa no memorii ga mou ippai da.
= The computer’s memory is already full.
Ex. アイスクリームを買ってきたが冷凍庫がいっぱいで入らない。
= アイスクリームをかってきたがれいとうこがいっぱいではいらない。
= Aisukuriimu wo katte kita ga reitouko ga ippai de hairanai.
= I bought ice cream, but the freezer is full so it won’t fit.
Ex. 両手いっぱいの花束をもらった。
= りょうていっぱいのはなたばをもらった。
= Ryoute ippai no hanataba wo moratta.
= I received an armful of bouquets.
Ex. 今週はもう予定がいっぱい詰まっている。
= こんしゅうはもうよていがいっぱいつまっている。
= Konshuu wa mou yotei ga ippai tsumatte iru.
= My schedule is already full this week.
Ex. お腹がいっぱいになるまで食べた。
= おなかがいっぱいになるまでたべた。
= Onaka ga ippai ni naru made tabeta.
= I ate until I was full.
Ex. もうお腹がいっぱいです。
= もうおなかがいっぱいです。
= Mou onakaga ippai desu.
= I’m already full.
Ex. あの店はいつも予約がいっぱいで席が取れない。
= あのみせはいつもよやくがいっぱいでせきがとれない。
= Ano mise wa itsumo yoyaku ga ippai de seki ga torenai.
= That restaurant is always fully booked, so I can’t get a table.
Ex. 空港からの電車はスーツケースをもった旅行客で一杯だった。
= くうこうからのでんしゃはスーツケースをもったりょこう
きゃくでいっぱいだった。
= Kuukou kara no densha wa suutsukeesu wo mottari ryokoukyaku de ippai datta.
= The train from the airport was full of tourists with suitcases.
* 〜 気持ちでいっぱい
= 〜きもちでいっぱい
= ~ kimochi de ippai
= filled with feelings of ~
Ex. 申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱいです。
= もうしわけないきもちでいっぱいです。
= Moushiwakenai kimochi de ippai desu.
= I’m filled with feelings of regret/apology.
Ex. 感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。
= かんしゃのきもちでいっぱいです。
= Kansha no kimochi de ippai desu.
= I’m filled with gratitude.
* 胸がいっぱい
= むねがいっぱい
= Mune ga ippai
= To be overwhelmed with emotions such as joy, sadness, or deep feelings.
Ex. 胸がいっぱいで何も言えません。
= むねがいっぱいでなにもいえません。
= Mune ga ippai de nani mo imasen.
= My heart is so full, that I can’t say anything.
* 幸せ一杯 = しあわせいっぱい = shiawase ippai = extremely happy
Ex. 妹は好きな人と結婚して幸せ一杯な生活をしていると思っていたのにすぐに別れてしまった。
= いもうとはすきなひととけっこんしてしあわせいっぱいなせいかつをしているとおもっていたのにすぐにわかれてしまった。
= Imouto wa sukina hito to kekkon shite shiawase ippaina seikatsu wo shiteiru to omotteita noni suguni wakarete shimatta.
= After marrying the person she loved, I thought my sister was living a super happy life, but she broke up with him really quickly.
Ex. 新しい一年が幸せいっぱいな年になりますように。
= あたらしいいちねんがしあわせいっぱいなとしになりますように。
= Atarashii ichine ga shiawase ippaina toshi ni narimasu you ni.
= I hope the new year will be filled with happiness.
* 頭がいっぱい = あたまがいっぱい = atama ga ippai
/頭の中がいっぱい = あたまのなかがいっぱい = atama no naka ga ippai
= to be preoccupied/ have a lot on one’s mind.
Ex. 彼女のことで頭がいっぱいで仕事が手につかない。
= かのじょのことであたまがいっぱいでしごとがてにつかない。
= Kanojo no koto de atama ga ippai de shigoto ga te ni tsukanai.
= I’m so preoccupied with thoughts about her, that I can’t focus on work.
* 手が一杯 = てがいっぱい = te ga ippai / 手一杯 = ていっぱい = teippai
= to have one’s hands full /to have too much to do / to be fully occupied
Ex. 彼を助けてあげたいが、今は自分のことで手が一杯だ。
= かれをたすけてあげたいが、いまはじぶんのことでてがいっぱいだ。
= Kare wo tasukete agetai ga, ima wa jibun no koto de te ga ippai da.
= I want to help him, but right now I’m overwhelmed with my own matters.
Ex. 今の仕事で手一杯なので他の仕事を引き受けられない。
= いまのしごとでていっぱいなのでほかのしごとをひきうけられない。
= Ima no shigoto de teippai nano de hoka no shigoto wo hikiukerarenai.
= I’m tied up with my current work, so I can’t take on anything else right now.
＊力一杯
= ちからいっぱい
= chikara ippai
= with all one’s might / with all one’s strength
/ Doing something with maximum effort or strength.
(Talking to a player before the game)
Ex. 力一杯応援しますのでがんばってください。
= ちからいっぱいおうえんしますのでがんばってください。
= Chikara ippai ouen shimasu node ganbatte kudasai.
= I’ll cheer you on with all I’ve got, so do your best!
* 元気一杯
= げんきいっぱい
= genki ippai
= full of energy / being very energetic or lively
Ex. 彼女はいつも元気一杯で一緒にいるだけで楽しい。
= かのじょはいつもげんきいっぱいでいっしょにいるだけでたのしい。
= Kanojo wa itsumo genki ippai de issho ni iru dake de tanoshii.
= She is always full of energy, and it is fun just being with her.
6) Until the end of (a time period)
Ex. 今年一杯/いっぱいで仕事をやめることにしました。
= ことしいっぱいでしごとをやめることにしました。
= Kotoshi ippai de shigoto wo yameru koto ni shimashita.
= I’ve decided to quit my job by the end of this year.
Ex. 入会金半額オフのキャンペーンは今月一杯/いっぱいです。お急ぎください。
= にゅうかいきんはんがくオフのキャンペーンはこんげついっぱいです。おいそぎください。
= Nyuukaikin hangaku ofu no kyanpeen wa kongetsu ippai desu. Oisogi kudasai.
= The campaign with half-off membership fees is until the end of this month. Please hurry.
Ex. まだ体調がすぐれないので４月いっぱいお休みします。
= まだたいちょうがすぐれないので４がついっぱいおやすみします。
= Mada taichou ga sugurenai node shigatsu ippai oyasumi shimasu.
= Since I’m still not feeling well, I’ll be taking the rest of April off.
Ex. 返事は明日いっぱい待ちますので慎重に考えてください。
= へんじはあしたいっぱいまちますのでしんちょうにかんがえてください。
= Henji wa ashita ippai machimasu node shinchou ni kangaete kudasai.
= I will wait for your reply until the end of tomorrow, so please consider it over carefully.
7) Other expressions with 一杯 = いっぱい = ippai = full of ~
* 精一杯 = せいいっぱい = to the best of one’s ability/ with all one’s might.
Ex. 今までありがとうございました。新しい職場でも精一杯がんばります。
= いままでありがとうございました。あたらしいしょくばでもせいいっぱいがんばります。
= Imamade arigatou gozaimashita. Atarashii shokuba demo seiippai ganbarimasu.
= Thank you for everything up until now. I will do my best at the new workplace as well.
* 目一杯 = めいっぱい = meippai = to the fullest, as much as possible
Ex. やっと日本に来れたのだから目一杯楽しもう。
= やっとにほんにこれたのだからめいっぱいたのしもう。
= Yatto nihon ni koreta no dakara meippai tanoshimou.
= Now that I’ve finally come to Japan, let’s make the most of it.
* 一杯食わされる
= いっぱいくわされる
= Ippai kuwasareru
= to be tricked / to be taken advantage of (when someone has been deceived or made to do something under false pretenses.)
Ex. 信じていた人に一杯食わされた。
= しんじていたひとにいっぱいくわされた。
= Shinjite ita hito ni ippai kuwasareta.
= I was taken advantage of by a person I trusted.
8) More conversational expressions:
* いっぱいいっぱい（一杯一杯) = ippai ippai = to be swamped / overwhelmed / to be up to one’s ears/ to have too much on one’s plate
Ex. 今、精神的にいっぱいいっぱいで何をやっても手につかない。
= いま、せいしんてきにいっぱいいっぱいでなにをやってもてにつかない。
= Ima, seishinteki ni ippai ippai de nani wo yatte mo te ni tsukanai.
= I’m mentally overwhelmed right now, and I can’t focus on anything I try to do.
Ex. 仕事がいっぱいいっぱいで帰ったら寝るだけの生活が続いている。
= しごとがいっぱいいっぱいでかえったらねるだけのせいかつがつづいている。
= Shigoto ga ippai ippai de kaettara neru dake no seikatsu ga tsuzuite iru.
= I am swamped with work, and when I get home, all I do is sleep.
Ex. 予算いっぱいいっぱいだからどこかで経費を減らさないといけないね。
= よさんいっぱいいっぱいだからどこかでけいひをへらさないといけないね。
= Yosan ippai ippai dakara dokoka de keihi wo herasanai to ikenai ne.
= The budget is tight, so we need to cut expenses somewhere.
