(If you want to jump to How to use te-form skipping how to form, click here.)

Verbs:

There are two ways to make te-form

⭐️How to use te-form

1. and then~: Do A and then do B

Indicating the order of actions or events./ describing the process in order.

Ex. (1) まず材料を切ってこの鍋にいれます。

= まずざいりょうをきってこのなべにいれます。

= Mazu zairyou wo kitte kono nabe ni iremasu.

= First cut up the ingredients and put them in this pot.

(negative form)

Ex. (2)  トマトは、切らないでそのまま鍋に入れてください。

= トマトは、きらないでそのままなべにいれてください。

= Tomato wa, kiranai de sonomama nabe ni irete kudasai.

= Put the tomatoes in the pot without cutting them.

Note: The difference between ( = te) and てから ( = tekara)

You can rephrase it with てから ( = tekara) with ( =te) in the example (1)

ってから = きってから = kittekara

but you can not use てから ( = tekara) in the example (2) because it is a negative form.

→X 切らないでから = きらないでから = kiranaide kara (wrong)

While ( = te) is just indicating the order of action, てから ( = tekara) implies the completion of action, “after doing something/after finish doing something”

Ex. (3)  図書館に行って友達に会います。

= としょかんにいってともだちにあいます。

= Toshokan ni itte tomodachi ni aimasu.

= I am going to the library and see my friend (there).

Note: Seeing the friend in the library. Or somewhere else.

Ex.(4) 図書館に行ってから友達に会います。

= としょかんにいってからともだちにあいます。

= Toshokan ni itte kara tomodachi ni aimasu.

= I am going to see my friend after going to the library.

Note: Seeing the friend somewhere but not in the library.

*****

Ex. 毎朝6時に起き、シャワーを浴びジョギングをします。

= まいあさろくじにおきて、しゃわーをあびてジョギングをします。

= Maiasa rokuji ni okite, shawaa wo abite jogingu wo shimasu.

= I get up at six, take a shower and go jogging every morning.

If you are talking about the past just change the last verb into the past tense.

Ex. 昨夜は、夜遅くまで漢字を勉強し寝ました。

= さくやは、よるおそくまでかんじをべんきょうしてねました。

= Sakuya wa, yoru osoku made kanji wo benkyou shite nemashita.

= Last night, I studied kanji until late, and then went to bed.

So you use te-form with the first verb and you can use any verb or auxiliary verb form  with the last verb. ( ~たい= tai/ ~よう = you / らしい = rashii, etc.)

Ex. お湯を沸かしお茶でも飲もうか?

= おゆをわかしておちゃでものもうか。

= Oyu wo wakashite ocha demo nomou ka?

= Why don’t we boil water and have a cup of tea?

Ex. 健康のため、これからは甘い物は避け毎日運動をしよう。

= けんこうのため、これからあまいものはさけてまいにちうんどうをしよう。

= Kenkou no tame, kore kara wa amai mono wa sakete mainichi undou wo shiyou.

= To stay fit, I am going exercise every day and avoid sweets from now on.

= Hanako wa Natsuyasumi wa Hokkaidou ni itte oishii mono wo ippai tabetan datte.

= I heard Hanako went to go to Hokkaido and had lots of delicious food over her summer break.

2) and (Doing A and Doing B) : Listing up multiple actions/events/states
As we have seen in 1) you connect a few verbs with te-form to indicate the order of actions. And when you list up random actions, you connect the verbs with たり ( = tari).

Related Lesson: How to use  たり ( = tari ) Link →https://bit.ly/3Dl7xDd

Ex. ハワイに行ったら、毎日泳いだりドライブしたり買い物に行ったりしたい。

= Hawai ni ittara, mainichi oyoidari doraibu shitari kamono ni ittari shitai.

= If I go to Hawaii/When I go to Hawaii, I would like to swim, go for a drive, go shopping and so on every day.

Though たり ( = tari) is much more natural in many cases, you may hear/see connecting verbs with te-form to list up actions randomely as well especially with repetitive words such as 毎日 = まいにち = mainichi = every day, 毎晩 = まいばん = maiban= every night , 毎年 = まいとし= maitoshi = every year, etc. or when you are talking about one’s routine.

ハワイに行ったら毎日泳いでドライブし買い物に行きたい。

= ハワイにいったらまいにちおよいでドライブしてかいものにいきたい。

= Hawai ni ittara mainichi oyoide doraibu shite kaimono ni ikitai.

= If I go to Hawaii/When I go to Hawaii, I would like to swim, go for a drive, and go shopping every day.

In this case the order of the actions are not important as たり ( = tari).

While たり ( = tari) is more common and adds the nuance of giving the examples,

“doing A, doing B and so on “, you use te-form to list up actions more specifically.

A small child is asking his/her mother.

Ex. 子供:「お母さん、どうやったら大きくなれるの?」

= こども: 「おかあさん、どうやったらおおきくなれるの?」

= Kodomo: Okaasan, Dou yattara ookiku nareru no?

= Child: Mom, how can I grow big?

母: 「しっかり食べ、運動し、よく寝ることですよ。」

= はは: しっかりたべて、うんどうして、よくねることですよ。」

= Haha: Shikkari tabete, undou shite, yoku neru koto desuyo.

= Mother: You should eat properly, exercise and sleep well.

  1. Thanks for the lesson!

    In these sentences:
    日曜日は何もしないで過ごしました
    昨日の夜は、一睡もしないでゲームをしていた。

Why is it しないで and not しなくて ? It’s not telling someone not to do something, it’s talking about yourself so I’m confused.

    1. Hi Luna
      日曜日は何もしないで過ごしました
      昨日の夜は、一睡もしないでゲームをしていた。
ないで in these two sentences belong to the usage
      2) to do something without doing something

to spend the time without doing anything
to play the game without sleeping

Verb B ないでVerb A = to do A (main action) without doing B

If you give a reason or list up a couple of actions, you can use なくて

お金がなくて困った = I got troubled because I didn’t have money.
