How to use 一緒= いっしょ= issho

「ず~っと一緒にいてね。」

= Zuutto issho ni itene.

= Stay with me forever.

Hi everyone!

I am your guest teacher, Naru. 

Maggie Sensei asked me to be a guest teacher because I am cute. And that is something that I cannot deny.

We got a request to make a lesson on how to use 一緒 (  = いっしょ= issho) .

So let’s study the usage of  一緒 (  = いっしょ= issho) together.

一緒に「一緒」の使い方を勉強しましょう。

( = issho ni “issho” no tsukaikata wo benkyou shimashou.) 

1) to do something with someone, to do something together / to be with someone

一緒 ( = isshoni) + verb

Ex. 一緒に日本語の勉強をしましょう。

= Issho ni nihongo no benkou wo shimashou.

= Let’s study Japanese. (or together)

Ex. 今度、一緒にUSJに行かない?

= Kondo, issho ni USJ ni ikanai?

= Do you want to go to USJ ( Universal Studios Japan) with me?

Ex. ねえ、こっちでみんなと一緒にご飯食べない?

= Nee, kocchi de minna to issho ni gohan tabenai ?

= Hey, do you want to eat with us here?/Do you want to join us (and eat your meal with us)?

Ex. いつ家族一緒に旅行ができる日が来るんだろう。

= Itsu kazoku issho ni ryokou ga dekiru hi ga kurun darou.

= I wonder when my whole family can go traveling together.

Ex. 料理を教えてあげるから一緒に作ろうよ。

= Ryouri wo oshiete ageru kara issho ni tsukurou yo.

Let’s cook together. I will teach you how. 

(Literal meaning is: I will teach you how to cook so let’s cook together.)

Ex. 一緒に写真を撮ってもいいですか?

= Issho ni shashin wo totte mo ii desu ka?

= May I take a picture with you? / Do you mind if I take a picture with you?

On the phone: 

Ex. 「今、マギーと一緒なんだけど、そっちに行っていいかなあ。」

= Ima, Maggie to issho nan dakedo, socchi ni itte ii kanaa.

= I’m with Maggie right now and was wondering if we could go over there (where yo u are).

Ex. 今、誰と一緒にいるの?

= Ima, dare to issho ni iru no?

= Who are you with right now?

* 一緒する ( = goissho suru) (polite expression) to go somewhere with someone / accompany someone (when you are talking to someone superior) = 一緒に行く ( = issho ni iku) 

Ex. 一緒してもいいですか?

= Goissho shite mo ii desu ka?

= May I join you?

Ex. 今度、ゴルフ、ご一緒させていただいてもよろしいでしょうか?

= Kondo, gorufu, goissho sasete itadaite mo yoroshii de shou ka?

= Could I go golfing with you sometime?

At a restaurant:

A server asks you if you are with other customers.

Ex. A:「ご一緒ですか?*

= A:  “Goissho desu ka?”

= A :  “Are you together?”

You: 「いえ、違います。」

= You: “ie, chigaimasu.” 

=You: ” No, we are not.”

(* You also say お連れ様ですか?= Otsuresama desu ka? = the literal meaning is “Is that person your companion?” )

Ex. 駅までご一緒します。

Eki made goissho shimasu.

= I will go to the station with you.

2) put  ~ together / to mix  ~ 

Ex. 次にバターとアーモンド粉を一緒に混ぜます。

= Tsugi ni battaa to aamondoko wo issho ni mazemasu.

= Now, mix the butter and almond powder together. 

Ex. うっかり白のシャツを色物と一緒に洗ったらピンク色になってしまった。

= Ukkari shiro no shatsu wo iromono to issho ni arattara pinkuiro ni natte shimatta.

= I accidentally put my white shirt and colored clothes together and it turned pink. 

Ex. ご飯にマヨネーズとツナを一緒に混ぜると美味しいよ。やってみて。

= Gohan ni mayoneezu to tsuna wo issho ni mazeru to oishii yo. Yattemite.

= Mixing cooked rice with mayo and tuna is good. Give it a try! 

Ex. あんな人と一緒にしないでほしい。

= Anna hito to issho ni shinaide hoshii.

= Don’t lump me together with such a person.

デパートにて ( = depaato nite) = At a department store:

When the shop keeper sees a customer has other shopping bags, they sometimes offer to put your new about-to be purchased bag together with your other bags. 

Ex.お荷物一緒におまとめいたしましょうか?

= Onimotsu issho ni omatome itashimashou ka?

= Would you like me to put your bag into this one?

レストランにて ( = resutoran nite) = at a restaurant

Ex. お店の人「お会計は別々ですか?」

= Omise no hito: “Okaikei wa betsubetsu desu ka?

= Server: Would you like to split the bill?

A「いいえ、一緒に*お願いします。」(or 一緒で= issho de)

= A: iie, issho ni onegai shimasu.

= A: No, we’ll pay together. 

B :  「いいの?ごちそうさま!」

= B: “iino? Gochisou sama!” 

= B: “Really? Thank you! “

3) the same one

 レストランにて ( = resutoran nite) = at a restaurant

Ex. お店の人:「ご注文は、お決まりですか?」

= Omise no hito: “Gochuumon wa, okimari desu ka?”

= Server: “Are you ready to order?” 

A: 「私はAランチとコーヒーお願いします。」

= A: “Watashi wa A ranchi to koohii onegai shimasu.” 

= A:  I’ll have A-lunch and a coffee, please. 

B: 「私も一緒*のものをお願いします。」

= B: “Watashi mo issho no mono wo onegai shimasu.

= B: I’ll have the same. 

(Note: You can say 同じもの ( = onajimono) 

Ex. あっ!一緒Tシャツもってる!

= Ah! issho no tiishasu motteru.

= Ah! I have the same T-shirt! 

Ex. マギーと私は好みが一緒だ。

= Maggie to watashi wa konomi ga issho da.

= Maggie and I have the same taste.

Ex. 弟はいつも僕と一緒のものを食べたがる。

= Otouto wa itsumo boku to issho no mono wo tabetagaru.

= My little brother always wants to eat the same thing as I do.

Ex. メイちゃんと一緒の自転車が欲しい。

= Mei chan to issho no jitensha ga hoshii.

= I want the same bicycle that Mei has.

4) at the same time, something happened at the same time

Ex. 彼よりも遅く家を出たのに着いたのは一緒だった。

=  Kare yori mo osoku ie wo deta noni tsuita no wa issho datta.

= I left home later than he did, but we got there at the same time. 

Ex. ボブと僕*はほとんど一緒の時期に日本語を勉強し始めた。

= Bobu to boku wa hotondo issho no jiki ni nihongo wo benkyou shihajimeta.

= Bob and I started studying Japanese at almost the same time.

(Note: ( = boku) first pronoun for a man)

Ex. A and B are talking at the same time

A&B :「ねえ、聞いて!」

= A&B : “Nee, kiite.”

= A&B : “Hey, guess what! “

C: 一緒に話さないで一人ずつ話してよ。」

= C: “issho ni hanasanai de hitorizutsu hanashite yo.

= C:  Don’t talk to me at the same time. One by one, OK?

Ex. レストランにて= resutoran nite = at a restaurant 

お店の人:「 お飲み物はお食事と一緒にお持ちしますか?」

= Omise no hito: “Onomimono wa oshokuji to issho ni omochi shimasu ka?”

= Server: Shall I bring your drink with your meal?

A: 「私は食後にお願いします。」

= A: “Watashi wa shokugo ni onegai shimasu.”

= A: “I’ll have my drink after my meal.”

B: 「私は、食事と一緒にお願いします。」

= B: “Watashi wa, shokuji to issho ni onegai shimasu.”

= B: “Please bring it with my meal. “

5) to get married

一緒になる (  = issho ni naru = ) to be with someoneto get married 

Ex. いつになったら彼と一緒になれるのかなあ。

= itsu ni nattara kare to issho ni nareru no kanaa.

= I wonder when I can get with him (I can get married to him.)

Ex. 来年には彼女と一緒になりたいと考えているんだ。

= Rainen niwa kanojo to issho ni naritaito kangaete irunda.

= I am thinking to get married to my girlfriend next year.

Ex. あの二人はいつ一緒になるの?

= Ano futari wa itsu issho ni naru no?

= When are they going to get married?

6) 一緒くた ( = isshokuta ) = jumbling up together, mixing up something 

(It sounds more negative than 一緒= issho ni)

Ex. 隣の家は、可燃ごみも不燃ごみも一緒くたにして出している。

= Tonari no ie wa, kanengomi mo funengomi mo isshokuta ni shite dashiteiru.

= My next-door neighbor takes out the trash mixing up  burnable and non-burnable trash. 

Ex. フレンチブルとボストンテリアを一緒くたにしないでくれる? (From Maggie)

= Furenchiburu to bosuton teria wo issho kuta ni shinai de kureru?

= Don’t mix up French bulldogs and Boston Terriers OK?
