「僕、チョ〜セレブなんだけどググってみて!」
= Boku choo serebu nandakedo gugutte mite!
= I am a super celebrity. Try googling me!
Today’s guest teacher is Basil Farrow!
His mommy, a very cool fashion blogger, La Carmina told me that he is a bit of celebrity ’cause he used to belong to the famous actress Mia Farrow and her son, Ronan Farrow! :h:
So today’s main slang verb is ググる = ぐぐる ( = guguru). It means “to google” or “to search for something on Google”
Ex. そんなこと自分でググったら?
= Sonna koto jibun de guguttara?
= Why don’t you google it yourself?
Ex. この言葉の意味がわからなかったからググってみた。
= Kono kotoba no imi ga wakaranakatta node gugutte mita.
= I didn’t know the meaning of the word so I googled it and checked the meaning.
Now I’ll take advantage this opportunity to teach you some internet slang! I have a request from Bing a while ago to make this type of lesson.
The main stream of ネットオタク ( = netto otaku ) = internet geeks are from
* 2ちゃんねる ( = nichanneru) = Channel Two→2ちゃん =ni chan
This is a Japanese Internet forum which has more than 600 bulletin boards based on anonymous posting, 名無しさん ( = nanashi san) = Mr/Mrs No name, anonymous
and
* ニコニコ動画 ( = nikoniko douga) →ニコ動 ( = nikodou)
It is a Japanese version of Youtube but the difference is…. Well, you really have to see it to get the idea.
This is the collaboration video that Gimmeaflakeman made on Youtube but someone re-uploaded on Nico-dou!
Did you see that? It’s very different from Youtube. (The annotations are from Youtubers) People just type the comments and sometimes it is covered with them and you can’t even see the original video. You can activate or deactivate the comments but it is more fun to read other people’s comments and people enjoy sharing their feelings as they watch the video in real time. You can’t tell who wrote which comment. It is completely anonymous as well.
You see lots of wwww...right? That means LOL. (I have already explained this in my lesson 若者言葉 ( = Wakamono kotoba ) Young people’s Japanese)
Now there are soooo many internet slang words, and I will teach you some of them today. Many of the expressions are very specific and you won’t hear or see them in daily life. I bet many of your Japanese friends would say they have never heard of them or have no clue what they mean. (Either way they are mostly used in written form not verbally. Nobody says “www” ( = daburu daburu daburu)=“double u”, “double-u”, “doubl-u” verbally.)
But once you are in this ネットの世界 ( = Netto no sekai ) = Internet World, you will recognize many of them.
2chan and Nicodou have their own separate lingos so “Net otaku” can actually tell where you are from by the lingo you use.
Some of them have crossed over into mainstream internet use and have spread on the net and now people use them naturally in their own blogs, on twitter, in their emails or even in their verbal conversations.
They have some characteristics,
1) abbreviation of Japanese or English words
2) play with words using totally different meanings of kanji (but having a phonetic equivalent).
3) totally new words
They are all mixed up but here are some examples.
• ヤフる ( = yafuru) to use “Yahoo” as a search engine, auction or yahoo mail.
• ようつべ ( = youtube ) Youtube
• コピペ ( = kopipe ) copy and paste
• カワユス ( = kawayusu ) cute
It was originally from かわいい ( = kawaii) →かわゆい ( = kawayui) →かわゆいっす ( = kawayuissu) →かわゆす ( = kawayusu)
• 激しく同意 ( = hageshiku doui=) I really agree with you.
(激しく ( = hageshiku ) means fiercely, intensely and we never use this with 同意 ( = doui) agree in regular Japanese. But we have started to see this a lot on the net.)
• 4649, 46, or yr =よろしく( = yoroshiku) , please, when you ask a favor (Phonetically 4649= yon roku shi kyu sounds like yo ro shi ku)
• kwsk = 詳しく = kuwashiku = with details
• GJ = Good job!
★ Mainly from ニコニコ動画 = Nikoniko (NicoNico) douga lingo (some of them are used for 2chan as well)
• うp ( = uppu ) upload
• うp主 ( = uppu nushi ) the one who has uploaded the video
• おk = OK
•日本語でおk? ( = Nihongo de okkei) ?
You write this sarcastically when you don’t understand what some people are talking about. It means speak or write proper Japanese!
• サムネ ( = samune )←サムネイル ( = samuneiru ) thumbnail
:i: *They use different kanji to shorten the word
• わろた ( = warota) funny, it makes me laugh
variation from 2chan ワロス= warosu = funny
→emphasizing ギガワロス ( = giga warosu) or テラワロス ( = terawarosu)
→another variation ヤバス ( = yabasu) risky, awesome, super funny
• 吹いた ( = fuita ) burst into laughter
コーヒー吹いた ( = koohii fuita) this made me laugh a lot. (When you are drinking coffee you hear or see something funny and squirt the coffee through your mouth or nose.)
• 乙 ( = otsu ) ←お疲れ様 ( = Otsukare sama) Thank you for your hard work. When you appreciate someone’s hard work
• 今北 ( = ima kita ) ←今、来た ( = ima kita) I just got here.
• 今北産業 ( = imakita sangyou)
←今、来た 三行 ( = ima kita sangyou ) I just got here, Can you bring me up to speed regarding what has been happening in three lines? (Using in chat) Play with word. 産業 = sangyou=industry has the same sound of 三行 ( = sanngyou) three lines
• ニコ厨 ( = nikochuu ) people who are addicted to NicoNico Douga
←ニコニコ動画中毒 ( = Nikoniko douga chuudoku ) 中毒 ( = chuudoku ) addiction
• 厨房 ( = chuubou)
It refers to a person who is very childish or immature. (the original meaning of 厨房=chuubou= is kitchen but it sounds like other internet slang 中坊=chuubou= junior high school kids.)
• 裏山C (or シィー) ( = urayamashii) ←羨ましい ( = urayamashii ) to envy ( The literal meaning of 裏山 ( = urayama) is the mountain in back so it has nothing to do with “to envy” )
• アニキ ( = aniki)
The literal meaning is 兄貴 ( = aniki) older brother
It refers to an older brother figure who usually has a muscular body.
The representative aniki figure in Nikodou is Billy Herrington
•ゆとり = yutori a derogatory term for a certain generation of kids who are raised by the Japanese government ゆとり教育 ( = yutori kyouiku) =a relaxed education policy so result in a lack of intelligence
•これはひどい ( = kore wa hidoi ) This is horrible, painful. When you refer to something extremely ugly or horrible.
•歪みねぇな ( = yugami neena ) Cool! Super! Not bad at all! Compliments for a good quality video.
(Mainly for アニキ系 ( = aniki kei ) video)
• 自重 ( = jichou ) = Don’t go too crazy! Be good! Calm down! to calm someone who has gotten carried away. Don’t fool around If you see it with www = LOL they are actually enjoying it.
• ちょwwww ( = cho wwww ) = LOL! When they get a kick out of something
• 意味不 ( = imifu) ← 意味不明 ( = imifumei) = nonsense
• gdgd → グダグダ ( = gudaguda) to get lazy, to spend the time in a lazy way
• hshs → the breathing sound when you get excited
• mjk →マジですか?( = Maji desu ka? )= Are you serious?
• ktkr→キタコレ!! ( = kita kore) He we go./Here it comes/Here (someone) comes
• gkbr→ガクガクブルブル (= gakugaku buruburu) When you are scared..Brrrr…
• NTR → 寝取られる= netorareru = when your boyfriend/girlfriend had sex with someone else.
• IYH →イヤホ〜〜〜!!= Yaaaay!!
• 888888888….→ パチパチ…. applauding sound
With 顔文字 = kaomoji=face marks:
•キタ━━━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━━━ !!!!! ( = Kitaaa….!) = Here it comes! Here he/she/it/they comes!
•(´Д`;)ハ アハア ( = haahaa ) = puff and blow sound = When you get excited or sexually aroused
★ Mainly from 2-chan or blog, chat or bulletin board lingo:
• 炎上 ( = enjou ) the original meaning of 炎上 ( = enjou) is to burst into flames. To be attached by a huge number of unfavorable or critical comments on a blog.
• カキコ ( = kakiko ) →書き込み ( = kakikomi ) something written on a bulletin board.
• スレ ( = sure) thread
• レス ( = resu ) = response

• ノシ( = noshi) →Bye! = it looks like waving hands
• 鯖が落ちる ( = saba ga ochiru ) To have an unstable server or to drop an internet connection
鯖 ( = saba) means chub mackerel. It sounds like サーバー (= saabaa) server

Though I probably don’t need it much myself due to such helpful things such as the ピクシブ百科事典 and the ニコニコ大百科 which explains most things, I wonder if it would be useful to cover some more things that those two encyclopedia explain that pop up a lot, such as うぽつ (at the beginning of almost every video) and わこつ (at the beginning of almost every live stream).
@Commenter
If you know enough Japanese, those sites are very useful. It covers much more than my site.
And those slang words are changing everyday.
But thank you for visiting my site anyway. :)
Also some that I seen often (頻繁に見られる言葉):
俺得、誰得 (for me, for who)
あらし、荒らし、嵐 (troll)
んc (nice cut)
(ry (short for (ryaku))
虹 (二次元)
鯖 (サーバー server)
垢 (account). Also 複垢 (multiple accounts)
窓 (Microsoft windows)
林檎 (Apple, the company)
ネ申 (神)
タヒ (死) also 市ね 氏ね, and of course タヒれ
セクロス (sex, originally referred to the game “Sector Zone,” but now with a new meaning probably because of its resemblance to セックス)
禿同 (激しく同意)
BBA (ババァ, originally 婆)
釣り (魚を釣ろう… fishing…, and on the internet, a scam or fake, like 釣り動画)
黒歴史 (dark history, one that you’d rather forget. From Gundam)
希ガス (気がする)
アンチ (anti. Someone who hates something (goes after the thing hated). Often seen with 厨)
オワコン (終わったコンテンツ, something that has gone out of style)
大杉 (多すぎ)
フラグ (flag. 死亡フラグ、生存フラグ、成功フラグ etc. etc. – refers to signs or foreshadowing that something is about to happen, in a video or game)
CP (カップリング. Equivalent of “relationshipping” in English. Just wanted to toss this one in here)
@Tosiaki
Oh wow! Great list!!! (I covered some of them on my Twitter Japanese slang lesson but I have never heard many of them.)
Thank you! I think many people can use your additional list! :)
Another small addition
NKT (長く苦しい戦いだった, used after completing something difficult, especially in a game, and used jokingly after TAS videos)
NDK (ねぇ、どんな気持ち, for example, when someone is hovering over someone else, as if going “heeeey”)
ggrks (ググレカス, go google it you idiot)
I also do wonder if you could cover some words that are difficult to tell apart. If you do a search for them in Japanese, of course you can find multiple answers, but more answers are also great. Examples: 意外 & 案外, 意志 & 意思, 耐える & 堪える, 永遠 & 永久, 歳 & 才, 遺体 & 死体 & 死骸, 使用 & 利用 & 使う, 製作 & 制作 & 作製 & 作成 & 製造 & 造作 & 作る (創る, 造る). Obviously there are many others, but these are the ones I’ve gotten confused about in the past. Also wondering about convering words that you often see Japanese people misuse: 爆笑 (does not mean “burst of laughter”), 確信犯 (does not mean “belief that you definitely did something bad”)
This is awesome! Thank you!
*bookmarked!

Welcome to Maggie’s site! ♪( ´▽`)
I’ve heard a lot about “tktk”, seems to be like sarcasm or sparkles or something. Help?
Also, any slang terms you know of related to wovey-dovey romance or such? Like, say, text messaging your fiance.
@Ammika
I am not sure where you saw tktk.
tktk is from the game music when Super Mario Bros dies. テケテケ(=teketeke) →tktk
Another question : you mean slang that “lovey-dovy” couples use? I wonder if there are…If I think of it, I will let you know.
Thank you so much, Sensei.
I found this lesson just now but i think it will come into handy. Thank you! <3

those are really helpfull thank you!
I saw a lot of “8” on niko niko too, do you know what it means?
@Lillie Joe
You’re welcome!
88888 on Niconico doga meas “applause” The clapping sound in Japanese is パチパチ=pachipachi and 8 is read hachi or sometimes “pachi” so they “applause” by typing lots of 8.
aah! thank you ♥
@Lillie Joe
よかった!Yay! 8888
@Maggie Sensei: Thank you for the info! The link you gave was useful too. thank you very much Ms. Maggi Sensei!

Hello Maggie sensei! thank you for replying to my comment! actually, I first saw it on ameba PIGG. (virtual game) there was someone typing complicated kanjis (I couldn’t read N1 kanji yet) and then there were a lot of people typing out random numbers.. like 3649 and so on.. I don’t remember the others but perhaps you know some.. I hope you cans share your knowledge on this.
@roulette225
Hum… then they could be some kind of codes for that particular game. Maybe??? Like I said, sorry but I have no idea because 3649 is not common word play.
If I ever find out the meaning, I will let you know.
FYI I found this site for other GOROAWASE =wordplay with numbers
Maggie先生、ちちんぷいぷい
@apple407 www (^O^) Where did you hear that? I am not in pain!
ちちんぶいぶい is a cute magic word for kids who got injured to make the pain go. Like 痛いの痛いの飛んでけ〜! =Itaino itai no tondekee!!
cool! thanks! maggie sensei! but what about “3469??”
do you have any idea what it means?
maggie sensei! I hope that you can teach more about kaomoji! I seriously encounter it almost everyday! example:
ヾ(▼ヘ▼;)(  ̄っ ̄)(?_?) unfortunately I have no idea what it means…
thank you and more power to your site!
@roulette225
Sorry! I couldn’t get the meaning of 3469. I did some research but couldn’t find it. Maybe it is not that common. Do you remember when they use it?
Kaomoji are fun.
ヾ(▼ヘ▼;) → : We use this when someone says something stupid or dangerous, we try to warn or stop them ちょっと、or オイオイ… =”Hey, hey!”
( ̄っ ̄) →could be someone sulking (It could be other thing. You can chose depending on your feelings)
(?_?) →When you see ? mark that means confusion. Or when you don’t understand something you can use this facemark.
There are couple of sites where you can see many of them categorized by emotion. Example 1, Example 2
Check them out!
