Hi everyone! I’m Mari, your guest teacher for today.
Today’s lesson is basic Japanese. (JLPT N5 Level)
We are going to study how to use ましょう/ましょうか/ませんか = mashou / mashou ka/ masenka.
⭐️How to form:
* verb ます form →ませんか = masen ka
→ましょう = mashou
→ましょうか = mashou ka
Ex. 行きます = いきます = ikimasu
→行きませんか = いきませんか = ikimasen ka
→行きましょう= いきましょう = ikimashou
→行きましょうか = いきましょうか = ikimashou ka
⭐️How to use:
🔹ませんか = masen ka
1) Inviting someone to do something together/Asking someone if they want to do something with you: Do you want to do ~ with me? / Why don’t we ~ ?
(The speaker will also take part in the action.)
Ex. 今度、一緒に飲みに行きませんか？
= こんど、いっしょにのみにいきませんか？
= Kondo, isshoni nomi ni ikimasenka?
= Would you like to go out for a drink with me sometime?
📝 Casual speech: casual negative form ~ ない ( = nai)
→飲みに行かない？
= のみにいかない？
= Nomi ni ikanai?
You often use this expression with 一緒に ( = いっしょに = isshoni), together, with me/with us
Ex. 疲れました。ちょっと休みませんか？
= つかれました。ちょっとやすみませんか？
= Tsukaremashita. Chotto yasumimasenka?
= I’m tired. Why don’t we take a little break?
Ex. 外は暑いから店の中で待ちませんか？
= そとはあついからみせのなかでまちませんか？
= Soto wa atsui kara mise no naka de machimasenka?
= It’s hot outside so why don’t we wait inside of the store/restaurant/coffee shop?
Ex. おにぎりたくさん買ってきたから一緒に食べませんか？
= おにぎりたくさんかってきたからいっしょにたべませんか？
= Onigiri takusan kattekita kara issho ni tabemasenka?
= I bought a lot of rice balls. Would you like to eat them with me?
At a Karaoke shop:
Ex. 次はこの曲を私と歌いませんか？
= つぎはこのきょくをわたしとうたいませんか？
= Tsugi wa kono kyoku wo watashi to utaimasenka?
= Would you like to sing this song with me next?
Ex. うちの会社で働きませんか？
= うちのかいしゃではたらきませんか？
= Uchi no kaisha de hatarakimasenka?
= Would you like to work for our company?
Ex. 次の週末にオンラインゲームを一緒にしませんか？
= つぎのしゅうまつにオンラインゲームをいっしょにしませんか？
= Tsugi no shuumatsu ni onraingeemu wo isshoni shimasenka?
= Would you like to play online games with me next weekend?
2) Asking someone to do something./Asking someone if they want to do something. (The speaker is not necessarily involved in the action.)
Ex. クッキーを焼いたんですが、少し持って行きませんか？
= クッキーをやいたんですが、すこしもっていきませんか？
= Kukkii wo yaitan desuga, sukoshi motte ikimasenka?
= I baked cookies. Would you like to take some with you?
Ex. 来年は、ご家族で日本に旅行をしてみませんか？きっと楽しいですよ。
= らいねんは、ごかぞくでにほんにりょこうをしてみませんか？きっとたのしいですよ。
= Rainen wa, gokazoku de nippon ni ryokou wo shitemimasenka? Kitto tanoshii desuyo.
= Why don’t you go on a trip to Japan with your family next year? I bet you will have fun.
Ex. この新商品を使ってみませんか？
= このしんせいひんをつかってみませんか？
= Kono shinshouhin wo tsukattemimasenka?
= Would you like to try this new product?
Ex. ポイントカード作りませんか？
= ポイントカードつくりませんか？
= Pointokaado tsukurimasenka?
= Would you like to make a rewards/loyalty card?
Ex. コーヒーのおかわりはいりませんか？
= Koohii no okawari wa irimasenka?
= Would you like another cup of coffee?
3) Asking someone if they have some information on someone or something.
Ex. このプロジェクトを私達と一緒にやってみたい人はいませんか？
= このプロジェクトをわたしたちといっしょにやってみたいひとはいませんか？
= Kono purojekuto wo watashitachi to issho ni yatte mitai hito wa imasen ka?
= Does anybody want to do this project with us?
Ex. この辺にいいお店はありませんか？
= このへんにいいおみせはありませんか？
= Kono hen ni ii omise wa arimasen ka?
= Are there any good restaurants/coffee shops/stores around here?/Do you know any good restaurants/coffee shops/stores around here?
Ex. マギー先生のサイトでゲスト先生をしてくれるかわいい犬や猫はいませんか？
= マギーせんせいのサイトでゲストせんせいをしてくれるかわいいいぬやねこはいませんか？
= Maggie Sensei no saito de gesuto sensei wo shite kureru kawaii inu ya neko wa imasen ka?
= Are there any cute dogs and cats who are willing to be guest teachers on Maggie Sensei’s site?
Ex. 東京で安くていいホテルはありませんか？
= とうきょうでやすくていいホテルはありませんか？
= Toukyou de yasukute ii hoteru wa arimasen ka?
= Do you know / Are there any good cheap hotels in Tokyo?
4) To confirm/check if someone doesn’t do something/something isn’t ~: You don’t do ~? / You are going to do ~? / It is not ~?
Ex. もう食べませんか？
= もうたべませんか？
= Mou tabemasen ka?
= You are not going to eat anymore?
Ex. もういりませんか？
= Mou irimasen ka?
= Don’t you don’t need it anymore?
Ex. まだ帰りませんか？
= まだかえりませんか？
= Mada kaerimasen ka?
= Aren’t you going home yet?
Ex. お酒は全く飲みませんか？
= おさけはまったくのみませんか？
= Osake wa mattaku nomimasen ka?
= You don’t drink alcohol at all?
Ex. 一人でいたいときもありませんか？
= ひとりでいたいときもありませんか？
= Hitori de itai toki mo arimasen ka?
= Don’t you ever want to be alone?
Ex. もう腕は痛くありませんか？
= もううではいたくありませんか？
= Mou ude wa itaku arimasen ka?
= Your arm doesn’t hurt anymore?
Ex. このスープ、お口に合いませんか？(polite)
= このスープ、おくちにあいませんか？
= Kono suupu, okuchi ni aimasen ka?
= Don’t you like this soup?
Ex. 車が動きませんか？
= くるまがうごきませんか？
= Kuruma ga ugokimasen ka?
= Your car isn’t working?
Ex. 電車はまだ来ませんか？
= でんしゃはまだきませんか？
= Densha wa mada kimasen ka?
= The train hasn’t come yet?
5) Asking for someone’s agreement or opinion.
Ex. 何かおかしいと思いませんか？
= なにかおかしいとおもいませんか？
= Nanika okashii to omoimasen ka?
= Don’t you think something is strange?
Ex. こんな家に住みたいと思ったことはありませんか？
= こんないえにすみたいとおもったことはありませんか？
= Konna ie ni sumitai to omotta koto wa arimasen ka?
= Haven’t you ever wanted to live in a house like this?
Ex. 昨日、髪を切ったのですが短すぎませんか？
= きのう、かみをきったのですがみじかすぎませんか？
= Kinou, kami wo kitta no desu ga mijikasugimasen ka?
= I got my haircut yesterday. Do you think it’s too short?
Ex. このビール少し高くありませんか？
= このビールすこしたかくありませんか？
= Kono biiru sukoshi takaku arimasen ka?
= Isn’t this beer a bit too expensive?
Ex. そうは思いませんか？
= そうはおもいませんか？
= Sou wa omoimasen ka?
= Don’t you think so?
6) Asking or telling someone to do something for you.
Vte-form + くれませんか/もらえませんか/(polite) いただけませんか？
= Vte-form + kuremasen ka/moraemasenka?/(polite) itadakemasen ka?
Ex. 写真を撮ってくれませんか？
= しゃしんをとってくれませんか？
= Shashin wo tottekuremasen ka?
= Could you take a picture of me/us?
Ex. 静かにしてもらえませんか？
= しずかにしてもらえませんか？
= Shizuka ni shite moraemasen ka?
= Can you be more quiet?
Ex. 来週までにうちに届けていただけませんか？
= らいしゅうまでにうちにとどけていただけませんか？
= Raishuu made ni uchi ni todokete itadakemasen ka?
= Would it be possible to deliver it by next week?
Ex. すみません。ペンを貸していただけませんか？
= すみません。ペンをかしていただけませんか？
= Sumimasen. Pen wo kashite itadakemasen ka?
= Excuse me. Could you lend me your pen? (→Can I borrow your pen?)
🔹ましょう = mashou
1. Giving a suggestion to do something together.: Let’s do ~
2. Accepting the invitation/suggestion to do something together. (Yes, let’s!)
ましょう ( = mashou) is used to simply state one’s suggestion or invitation. The speaker has already decided what to do and tells the listener what to do without actually seeking the listener’s response or opinion.
Ex. さあ食べましょう。
= さあたべましょう。
= Saa tabemashou.
= Let’s eat!
📝 In casual speech, you use a volitional form.
verb する ( = suru) →Volitional form (し)よう ( = (shi)you)
食べよう = たべよう = tabeyou

Ex. A: 近いうちに、飲みに行きましょう。
= ちかいうちに、のみにいきましょう。
= Chikaiuchi ni, nomini ikimashou.
= Why don’t we go out for a drink sometime soon?
B: いいですね。行きましょう！行きましょう！
= いいですね。いきましょう！いきましょう！
= iidesu ne. Ikimashou! Ikimashou!
= That sounds good! Let’s go! Let’s go!
(Accepting the invitation)
Note: In Japanese conversations, you sometimes repeat the same phrase twice to express your enthusiasm.
Ex. (先生) 「 さあ、クラスを始めましょう。」
= (せんせい）さあ、クラスをはじめましょう。
= (Sensei) Saa, Kurasu wo hajimemashou.
= (Teacher) “OK, let’s start the class.”
Ex. 今日は楽しかったですね。またみんなで集まりましょう。
= きょうはたのしかったですね。またみんなであつまりましょう。
= Kyou wa tanoshikatta desu ne. Mata minna de atsumarimashou.
= It was fun today. Let’s get together again sometime!
Ex. 暑いから窓を開けましょう。
= あついからまどをあけましょう。
= Atsui kara mado wo akemashou.
= It’s hot, so let’s open the windows.
Ex. 来週は台風が来るらしいから旅行に行くのはやめましょう。
= らいしゅうはたいふうがくるらしいからりょこうにいくのはやめましょう。
= Raishuu wa taifuu ga kururashii kara ryokou ni iku nowa yamemashou.
= Let’s not go traveling (or Let’s cancel the trip) because it seems like a typhoon is coming next week.
Ex. 雨が降ってきたからタクシーに乗りましょう。
= あめがふってきたからタクシーにのりましょう。
= Ame ga futte kita kara takushii ni norimashou.
= It has started to rain, so let’s take a taxi.
Ex. さあ、乾杯しましょう！🍻
= Saa, kanpai shimashou.
= さあ、かんぱいしましょう！
= Let’s make a toast!
Ex. 今年もがんばりましょう！
= ことしもがんばりましょう！
= Kotoshi mo ganbarimashou.
= Let’s do our best again this year.
2) Encouraging someone to do something/Urging someone to do something or giving a command or warning.
This expression is mainly used by adults/parents/teachers when they talk to children, students, or someone younger or of a lower social status. It can also be used as a warning for users/consumers/patients.
Ex. ここに名前を書きましょう。
= ここになまえをかきましょう。
= Koko ni namae wo kakimashou.
= Write your name, here.
Ex. 今度のテストはもっとがんばって勉強しましょうね。
= こんどのテストはもっとがんばってべんきょうしましょうね。
= Kondo no tesuto wa motto ganbatte benkyou shimashoune.
= Study harder in the next text, OK?
Ex. わからない言葉があったら辞書で調べてみましょう。
= わからないことばがあったらじしょでしらべてみましょう。
= Wakaranai kotoba ga attara jisho de shirabete mimashou.
= If there is a word that you don’t know, look it up in the dictionary.
Ex. 車には気をつけましょうね。
= くるまにはきをつけましょうね。
= Kuruma niwa ki wo tsukemashou.
= Be careful with the cars, OK? / Let’s be careful with the cars, OK?
Ex. おしゃべりはやめましょう。
= Oshaberi wa yamemashou.
= Stop talking. (←Let’s stop talking.)
Ex. トイレはきれいに使いましょう。
=トイレはきれいにつかいましょう。
= Toire wa kirei ni tsukaimashou.
= Please keep the restroom clean. /Let’s keep the restroom clean.
🔹ましょうか = mashou ka
1) Giving someone a suggestion to do something with you: Shall we do ~?
While ませんか ( = masenka) requires a yes/no response from the listener, ましょうか ( = mashouka) is a more subtle way to ask someone to do something with you while checking the reaction or response of the listener.
Ex. 冷めないうちに食べましょうか。
= さめないうちにたべましょうか。
= Samenai uchi ni tabemashou ka.
= Shall we eat before it gets cold?
📝 In casual speech you use the volitional form + か ( = ka)
→食べようか = たべようか = tabeyou ka
Ex. そろそろ行きましょうか?
= そろそろいきましょうか?
= Sorosoro ikimashou ka?
= Shall we go now?
Ex. あそこに座りましょうか？
= あそこにすわりましょうか？
= Asoko ni suwarimashou ka?
= Shall we sit down there?
Ex. お昼はどこも混んでいるからコンビニで何か買いましょうか。
= おひるはどこもこんでいるからコンビニでなにかかいましょうか？
= Ohiru wa dokomo konde iru kara konbini de nanika kaimashou ka.
= It’s crowded everywhere at lunchtime so shall we buy something to eat at a convenience store?
Ex. 今日は忙しいから企画会議は明日にしましょうか。
= きょうはいそがしいからきかくかいぎはあしたにしましょうか。
= Kyou wa isogashii kara kikakukaigi wa ashita ni shimashou ka.
= Since we are busy today, shall we reschedule the planning meeting for tomorrow?
2) Offering help: Shall I do ~ for you? / Do you want me to do ~ for you?
Ex. 手伝いましょうか？
= てつだいましょうか？
= Tetsudaimashou ka?
= Would you like some help? / Can I give you a hand?
Ex. 荷物を持ちましょうか？
= にもつをもちましょうか？
= Nimotsu wo mochimashou ka?
= Can I help you carry your bag?
Ex. 家まで車で送りましょうか？
= いえまでくるまでおくりましょうか？
= Ie made kurumade okurimashou ka?
= Shall I drive you home? / Do you want me to drive you home?
Ex. 申込用紙をメールで送りましょうか？
= もうしこみようしをメールでおくりましょうか？
= Moushikomiyoushi wo meeru de okurimashou ka?
= Would you like me to send you the application form by email?
Ex. よかったら写真を撮りましょうか？
= よかったらしゃしんをとりましょうか？
= Yokattara shashin wo torimashou ka?
= Would you like me to take your picture?
Ex. 暑いですか？クーラーをつけましょうか？
= あついですか？クーラーをつけましょうか？
= Atsui desu ka? Kuuraa wo tsukemashou ka?
= Are you hot? Would you like me to turn on the A/C?
3) Accepting / Responding to someone’s invitation/suggestion.: OK, then let’s do ~.
Ex. A: 暗くなってきましたね。そろそろ帰りましょうか。
= くらくなってきましたね。そろそろかえりましょうか。
= Kurakunatte kimashita ne. Sorosoro kaerimashou ka.
= It is getting dark. Should we go home now?
B: そうですね。帰りましょう。
= そうですね。かえりましょう。
= Soudesu ne. Kaerimashou.
= You are right. Let’s go home.
Ex. A: 「明日は、１０時に駅の前で会いましょうか。」
= あしたは、じゅうじにえきのまえであいましょうか。
= Ashita wa, juuji ni eki no mae de aimashou ka.
= Shall we meet at 10:00 in front of the station?
B: 「そうしましょう。」
= Soushimashou.
= Let’s do that…
4) Asking for a preference/Asking how to do something/what to do/when to do/where to do, etc.
Ex. どの映画を観ましょうか？
= どのえいがをみましょうか？
= Dono eiga wo mimashou ka?
= Which movie should we watch?
Ex. 大阪までどうやって行きましょうか?
= おおさかまでどうやっていきましょうか？
= Oosaka made douyatte ikimashou ka?
= How should we go to Osaka?
Ex. 何時に家を出ましょうか?
= なんじにいえをでましょうか?
= Nanji ni ie wo demashou ka?
= What time should I leave the house?
Note: In this case, the subject is “I” but it involves the listener.
(Ex. in order to go somewhere with the listener.)
Ex. お飲み物は何にいたしましょうか？ (polite)
= おのみものはなににいたしましょうか？
= Onomimono wa nani ni itashimashou ka?
= What would you like to drink?

Now, I will show you the examples of mixing three forms.
Ex. (At a restaurant)
A: 何を頼みましょうか？
= なにをたのみましょうか？
= Nani wo tanomimashou ka?
= What should we order?
B: まず、飲み物を頼みませんか？飲みながら食べたいものを注文しましょう。
= まず、のみののをたのみませんか？のみながらたべたいものをちゅうもんしましょう。
= Mazu, nomimono wo tanomimasen ka? Nominagara tabetai mono wo chuumon shimashou.
= How about ordering something to drink first? Let’s order food while we are drinking.
Ex.
A: 今度の日曜日、どこか一緒に出かけませんか？
= こんどのにちようび、どこかいっしょにでかけませんか？
= Kondo no nichiyoubi, dokoka issho ni dekakemasen ka?
= Would you like to go somewhere with me next Sunday?
B: いいですね。行きましょう！マギーも誘いましょうか？
= いいですね。いきましょう！マギーもさそいましょうか？
= Ii desu ne. Ikimashou! Maggie mo sasoimashou ka?
= That sounds good. Let’s go! Shall we invite Maggie, too?
A: そうしましょう。大勢の方が楽しいし…
= そうしましょう。おおぜいのほうがたのしいし…
= Soushimashou. Oozei no hou ga tanoshii shi…
= Let’s do that. The more the merrier so…
Ex.
A: 「明日は、どこで会いましょうか？」
= あしたは、どこであいましょうか？
= Ashita wa, doko de aimashou ka?
= Where shall we meet tomorrow?
B: 「渋谷のハチ公前にしませんか？」
= しぶやのハチこうまえにしませんか？
= Shibuya no Hachikou mae ni shimasen ka?
= How about in front of Hachiko (the Hachiko statue) in Shibuya?
A: 「うーん、やっぱりモヤイ像の前にしましょう。」
= うーん、やっぱりモヤイぞうのまえにしましょう。
= Uun, yappari Moyai zou no mae ni shimashou.
= Hmm on second thought, let’s meet up in front of Moyai Statue.
