How to use 上 ( = うえ/じょう = ue/jou)

「マギー先生はかわいいに優しいですね。 」

= マギーせんせいはかわいいうえにやさしいですね。

= Maggie Sensei wa kawaii ue ni yasashii desune.

= You are not only cute but also sweet, Maggie Sensei.

「でしょ?」

= Desho?

= I know, right?

Hi everyone!  We are going to study how to use ( = うえ = ue / じょう = jou )

This is one of the first words you learned when you first starting studying Japanese, right?

I believe most of you know ( = うえ = ue) means “on/above/up/elder/superior”.

Ex. 山のにあるレストラン

= やまのうえにあるレストラン

= Yama no ue ni aru resutoran

= a restaurant on the top of a mountain

Ex. 机のにある新聞取ってくれる?

= つくえのうえにあるしんぶんとってくれる?

= Tsukue no ue ni aru shinbun totte kureru?

= Can you pass me the newspaper on the table?

Ex.一番の息子さんは、もう高校生ですか?

= いちばんうえのむすこさんは、もうこうこうせいですか?

= Ichiban ue no musukosan wa koukousei desu ka?

= Is your oldest son a high school student already?

In this lesson, we are going to study more expressions that use 上 (  = うえ = ue/じょう = jou).

( = うえで = uede) /  (  = うえ = ue):  after, upon

How to form:

* Verb (A) ~た (  = ta ) + (  = うえで  = uede ) /   (  = うえ) + Verb (B)

* Noun (A) + した ( = shita) + ( = うえで = uede ) /   ( = うえ) + Verb (B)

* Noun (A) + ( = no) + (  =うえで = uede ) /   ( = うえ) + Verb (B)

Note: You sometimes omit ( = de) and just say  ( = うえ = ue).

How to use:

⭐️To do B after doing A.

In order to do B, you have to do or finish A first.

Doing A is a condition or preparation in order to do B.

(with a verb)

相談した = そうだんした = soudan shita

Ex. 上司と相談したでご連絡します。

= じょうしとそうだんしたうえでごれんらくします。

= Joushi to soudan shita uede gorenraku shimasu.

= I will let you know after consulting/talking with my boss.

(with a noun)

相談 = そうだん = soudan

上司と相談ので/、ご連絡します。

= じょうしとそうだんのうえで/うえ、ごれんらくします。

= Joushi to soudan no ue de/ ue, gorenraku shimasu.

= I will let you know after consulting with my boss.

You can rephrase it with Vから ( = tekara)

上司と相談してからご連絡します。

= じょうしとそうだんしてからごれんらくします。

= Joushi to soudan shite kara gorenraku shimasu.

= I will let you know after consulting/talking with my boss.

📝 The difference between から ( = kara) and ( = うえで = uede)

Verb (A) ( = te) + から ( = kara) + Verb (B)

Verb (A) ( = ta) + (  = うえで  = uede) + Verb (B)

から (  = kara) is more conversational and it could simply indicate the sequence of actions.

Doing A and then doing B.

A and B can be related or unrelated.

上で (  = うえで  = uede) is more formal. One has to do A in order to do B./ Doing A is a preparation to do B.

So the action A and action B should be related.

Ex. 父と話してから決めます。

= ちちとはなしてからきめます。

= Chichi to hanashite kara kimemasu.

= I will decide after talking with my father.

You think it is necessary to talk with your father to decide something.

In this case you can rephrase it with ( = うえで = uede)

父と話したで決めます。

= ちちとはなしたうえできめます。

= Chichi to hanashita ue de kimemasu.

= I will decide after talking with my father.

( = うえで = uede) sounds more formal than から ( = kara) so even if verb (A) and verb (B) are related and you have to do (A) in order to do (B), it sounds unnatural if you are talking about something that is not that important.

A mother is talking to her child.

Ex. 手を洗ってから食べなさいよ。

= てをあらってからたべなさいよ。

= Te wo aratte kara tabenasai yo.

= You have to wash your hands before you eat.

→✖️ 手を洗ったで食べなさいよ。(unnatural)

= てをあらったうえでたべなさいよ。

= Te wo aratta ue de tabenasai yo.

Now when you indicate the sequence of the two random actions:

Ex. 夕ご飯を食べてから友達に電話をした。

= ゆうごはんをたべてからともだちにでんわをした。

= Yuugohan wo tabete kara tomodachi ni denwa wo shita.

= I called my friend after having dinner. / I had dinner and then called my friend.

Having dinner and calling friend are two random actions and not related.

In this case it would sound unnatural to use (  = うえで = uede).

✖️  夕ご飯を食べたで友達に電話をした。(unnatural)

= ゆうごはんをたべたうえでともだちにでんわをした。

= Yuugohan wo tabeta ue de tomodachi ni denwa wo shita.

Also when you use ( = うえで = uede), both verb A and B should be transitive verbs which involves one’s will.

For example:

Ex. 雨が止んでから出かけた。

= あめがやんでからでかけた。

= Ame ga yande kara dekaketa.

= I went out after it stopped raining.

雨が止む ( = あめがやむ = ame ga yamu = to stop raining)  is intransitive verb and it is something that you can control.

So you can’t use ( = うえで = uede)

✖️ 雨が止んだで出かけた。(unnatural)

= あめがやんだうえででかけた

= Ame ga yanda ue de dekaketa.

⭐️ Telling someone what you are going to do or did first (A) in order to do (B).  /Explaining the procedure: Doing A is/was necessary to do B.

* How to form:

Verb (A) ( = うえで = uede) / ( = うえ = ue)  + verb (B)

Noun (A) ( = no) ( = うえで = uede)  / ( = うえ = ue)  + verb  (B)

Ex. 値段を聞いたで買うかどうか決めます。

= ねだんをきいたうえでかうかどうかきめます。

= Nedan wo kiita ue de kau ka dou ka kimemasu.

= I will decide whether I will buy it or not after asking the price.

Ex. 両者合意の、契約を解消した。

= りょうしゃごういのうえ、けいやくをかいしょうした。

= Ryousha, goui no ue, keiyaku wo kaishou shita.

= They terminated the contract by mutual consent

Ex. これはよく話し合ったで出した結論です。

= これはよくはなしあったうえでだしたけつろんです。

= Kore wa yoku hanashiatta ue de dashita ketsuron desu.

= This is a decision that we have made after we talked it over.

⭐️Telling someone what they should do first in order to do something.  (instructions/advice )

Ex. よく考えたで返事をください。

= よくかんがえたうえでへんじをください。

= Yoku kangaeta ue de henji wo kudasai.

= Please get back to me after you think it over.

Note: You can also say: その = そのうえで  = sono uede

Ex. よく考えて、そので返事をください。

= よくかんがえて、そのうえでへんじをください。

= Yoku kangaete, sono ue de henji wo kudasai.

= Please think it over and then get back to me.

Ex. 内容をご確認の、ご署名ください。

= ないようをごかくにんのうえ、ごしょうめいください。

= おやのしょうだくをえたうえでキャンプにさんかしてください。

= Oya no shoudaku wo eta ue de kyanpu ni sanka shite kudasai.

Ex. やるべきことをやったで時間があれば好きなことをやればいい。

= やるべきことをやったうえでじかんがあればすきなことをやればいい。

= Yarubeki koto wo yatta ue de jikan ga areba sukina koto wo yareba ii.

= You can do whatever you want if you have time after doing what you have to do first.

Ex. 仕事が決まったで引っ越し先を考えた方がいいと思いますよ。

= しごとがきまったうえでひっこしさきをかんがえたほうがいいとおもいますよ。

= Shigoto ga kimatta ue de hikkoshisaki wo kangaeta hou ga ii to omoimasu yo.

⭐️To do something regardless / being aware of  ~ / knowing ~

Ex. 彼は、危険を承知ので台風の中、出かけていった。

= かれは、きけんをしょうちのうえでたいふうのなか、でかけていった。

= Kare wa, kiken wo shouchi no ue de taifuu no naka, dekakete itta.

= He went out in the middle of the typhoon knowing the risk.

Though ( = うえで = ue de) /  (  = うえ = ue) is a formal expression, you can use it in daily conversations like the following examples.

= しっぱいするかもしれないとわかったうえでやっているの?

= Shippai suru kamo shirenai to wakatta ue de yatteiru no?

= Are you doing that even knowing you might fail?
