けちょんけちょん = kechonkechon (Mini Lesson)

「あんなにけちょんけちょんに言わなくっても..」

= Annani kechonkechon ni iwanakuttemo…

= There is no need to criticize me that bad…

Today’s word is けちょんけちょん = kechonkechon

It means to criticizes someone or something in a very harsh way, to scathe.

It is a casual word but it is not a new word. (Some says it is originally from a dialect in Wakayama prefecture けちょに = kechoni. but I am not sure..)

Ex.「プレゼンどうだった？」

= Purezen doudatta?

= How did your presentation go?

「もうけちょんけちょんだった。」

= Mou kechonkechon datta.

= It went horribly. (It implies someone in the meeting criticize this person’s presentation harshly)

Usually it takes verbs such as,

•言う= iu = to say, to tell  !to right!  (passive) 言われる = iwareru

•やる = yaru  = to beat  !to right!  (passive)やられる = yarareru

•批評する= hihyou suru = to criticize   !to right!  (passive) 批評される = hihyou sareru

•けなす = kenasu = to speak badly   !to right!  (passive) けなされる = kenasareru

Ex.「上司にけちょんけちょんに言われた。」

= Joushi ni kechonkecho ni iwareta.

= My boss chewed me out. (It implies the boss criticized this person’s work performance severely.)

Ex.「昨日、随分酔って帰ったけど奥さん怒らなかった？」

= Kinou zuibun yotte kaetta kedo okusan okoranakatta?

= You were pretty drunk went you went home yesterday. Wasn’t your wife angry?

「いやもうけちょんけちょんに怒られました。」

= Iya mou kechonkechon ni okoraremashita.

= Yeah, she got really angry at me.

あの監督の映画は評論家にけちょんけちょんにこき下ろされていた。

= Ano kantoku no eiga wa hyouronka ni kechonkechon ni kokiorosarete ita.

= That director’s movie has been bitterly criticized by reviewers.

酷評 = kokuhyou = scathing

Also when you get in fights with someone and you get beat up, you say

Ex. けちょんけちょんにやられた。

=kechonkechon ni yarareta

= to get severely beaten up

Ex. けちょんけちょんにやる

= kechonkechon ni yaru

= to beat someone (up) completely

Synonyms :

• 散々 = sanzan

• こてんぱんに = kotenpan ni

• 徹底的に = tetteiteki ni

~ やられる = to be beaten completely

Ex. 散々／こてんぱん／徹底的にやられる

= Sanzan / Kotenpan ni / Tetteiteki ni yarareru

= to be beaten completely

マギー先生より = Maggie sensei yori = From Maggie

私、みかけより繊細なの。だから優しくしてね。

= Watashi mikake yori sensai nano. Dakara yasashiku shitene.

= I  am more vulnerable than I appear. Please be nice to me.
