すねる = suneru (Mini Lesson #136)

November 26, 2010 in Mini Lesson from No.124

「誰もパーティーに招待してくれなかったの…」

= Daremo paatei ni shoutai shite kurenakattano…

= Nobody invited me to the party…

Today’s key word is すねる = suneru
It means to be upset, to be sulky, to show your dissatisfaction by being in a bad mood.

When you don’t get what you want or enough attention from people, you show your dissatisfaction by pouting, being sulky or peevish.

You don’t necessarily say anything but people can tell by your attitude, behavior or facial expressions that show you’re unhappy, resentful, or dissatisfied.

It is generally considered childish behavior.

See the picture above?

「誰もパーティーに招待してくれなかったの…」

= Daremo paatei ni shoutai shite kurenakattano…

= Nobody invited me to the party…

So Maggie is very disappointed and sulking.

We can describe her this way:

:r:

「あ〜あ、マギーすねちゃっ
= Aaa, Maggie sunechatta
= Uh-oh… Maggie sulked…

And you would talk to her,

「そんなところですねてないでこっちへいらっしゃい
= Sonna tokoro de sunete naide kocchi e irasshai.
= Don’t be sulky there and come here.

We often describe a child or a pet but we also use it to describe adults if they get sulky for childish reasons.

:u:
Now lets do a listening exercise for fun!
