  1. Charles says:

    Maggie Sensei,

    Is there a chance you can explain でしょう and だろう? I read in a grammar book that those particles express certainty but something I read something in a manga and the character doesn’t seem to be expressing it. How else is it used?

    Charles.

    • Maggie says:

      @Charles

      Hello Charles,
      〜でしょう/〜だろう is used
      1) when you assume something
      Ex.明日はいい天気だろう/明日はいい天気でしょう= It is going to be a nice weather tomorrow/ I think it will be a nice weather tomorrow.
      2) When you make your point
      Ex. だから言ったでしょう/だから言っただろう(Male speech)
      = I told you so!

      3) When you ask someone for agreement
      Ex. これ美味しいでしょう/これ美味しいだろう
      = It’s delicious, right?

      If you don’t understand the usage of what you have read in manga, feel free to give me the line.
      Please write a comment in Maggie’s room or any comment section in the lessons. I may eventually delete comment section in this Index page.

  2. dwishiren says:

    Hello! Can you explain me why ~ない here does’t mean in the nagative?

    日曜日、ドライブにいかない?
    =Do you want to take a drive this Sunday?
    今度の休み、どこか遊びに行かない?
    =Do you wanna go out with me next holiday?

    Should it instead be “don’t you want to take a drive this Sunday”, don’t you wanna go out with me next holiday?

    • Maggie says:

      @dwishiren

      Hello!
      OK, ~ない? is
      *Do you want to do something (with me)?
      *Why don’t we do something?
      *How about doing something together?
      *********
      Don’t you want to do something is
      〜をしたくないの?

      *Don’t you want to take a drive this Sunday

      = 日曜日にドライブに行きたくないの?

      *Don’t you wanna go out with me next holiday?
      = 今度の休み、一緒に出かけたくないの?

      ~ない? lesson in in the draft box. I will eventually release it so please wait.

  3. Patrick says:

    Hi Maggie! I love the website!
    I have been studying Japanese for about five years, and just found out that my partner and I are are having twin baby girls!
    I really want to teach them Japanese, and plan on only speaking to them in Japanese, at least as much as possible. I have been watching a lot of shows like ChibiMarukochan and Hamutaro to learn good parental things to say, but do you think you could make a lesson of parent-y things to say?
    I want to learn what to say besides “触るな!” and ”向こうに行くな!” and “学校に行かないとだめ!”
    Are there some good sayings that Japanese parents use a lot you could teach us?
    Thank you!
    patrick

    • Maggie says:

      @Patric

      Hello Patric! Thank you for visiting this site.
      And congratulations! You will have twin baby girls. How exciting!!
      触るな、向こうにいくな are both very strong command.
      I would say 触っちゃだめ、向こうにいかないで. They sounds much softer.

      When you want them to do something, you can say
      ~しましょう = Let’s do ~ (But actually you are asking them to do something.)
      着替えましょう= kigaemashou = Let’s change the clothes.
      もう寝ましょう= mou nemashou = Let’s go to bed.
      片付けましょう= Katazukemashou = Let’s clean this up. /Let’s put these away.

      Children learn how to speak from their parents. If you keep using the strong command form, they will start using it when they grow up.
      Also we have lots of baby-talk in Japanese.

      目=おめめ
      耳=おみみ
      ごはん=まんま
      痛い=いたい、いたい

      At the moment I have a long request list but I can include this theme if you want. But meanwhile you can ask me questions anytime here, Twitter or Facebook.

  4. ブリアナ says:

    こんにちは!

    I am Breeana. I have been studying Japanese for almost a year and a half, and your site has helped me with many grammatical issues. But I have been somewhat confused about something for a while, and I can’t find anything about it anywhere I look. Nevertheless it appears in speech! It is about the use of “koto”, like as in “事”, after a verb. For example: たくさん日本語をしりません、でも私は習う事頑張っていますよ!

    I tried to find more examples, but I hope that suffices. I think it has something to do with verb nominalization, but I really would like to understand it before I use it and get used to something that might be incorrect!

    どうもありがとう!

    • Maggie says:

      @ブリアナ
      Hello Breeana,
      Actually some other people asked me the usage of こと. Right now my site is under construction so that I can’t make a new lesson. But I will make lesson about こと when it is fixed, OK?

      (In this case 習う事頑張っていますよ is not natural. I would say 頑張って習っています。)
